The grandest idea in the religion of the Vedanta is that we may reach the same goal by different paths; and these paths I have generalised into four, viz. those of work, love, psychology, and knowledge… Each blends into the other… We have found that, in the end, all these four paths converge and become one. આપણે એક જ લક્ષ્ય જુદા જુદા માર્ગે પ્રાપ્ત કરી શકીએ. વેદાંતનો આ એક ભવ્ય વિચાર છે અને આ માર્ગોના મેં ચાર વિભાગ પાડયા છે. કર્મ, ભક્તિ, યોગ અને જ્ઞાન… એકબીજા એકબીજામાં ભળી જાય તેવા છે… આખરે તો આ ચારે માર્ગો ભેગા થઈને એક બની જાય છે. તમામ ધર્મો તેમજ કાર્ય અને ઉપાસનાની સર્વ રીતો આપણને એક જ લક્ષ્ય તરફ દોરી જાય છે. वेदान्त धर्म का सबसे उदात्त तथ्य यह है कि हम एक ही लक्ष्य पर भिन्न भिन्न मार्गों से पहुँच सकते हैं। मैंने इन मार्गों को साधारण रूप से चार वर्गों में विभाजित किया है और वे हैं कर्ममार्ग, भक्तिमार्ग, योगमार्ग और ज्ञानमार्ग।… प्रत्येक का तिरोभाव दूसरे में हो जाता है।… अन्त में ये सब मार्ग एक ही लक्ष्य में जाकर एक हो जाते हैं। सारे धर्म तथा कर्म और उपासना की सारी साधन प्रणालियाँ हमें उसी एक लक्ष्य की ओर ले जाती हैं। (विवेकानंद साहित्य ग्रंथ 3 पृष्ठ 81)
