We cannot add happiness to this world; similarly, we cannot add pain to it either. The sum total of the energies of pleasure and pain displayed here on earth will be the same throughout. We just push it from this side to the other side, and from that side to this, but it will remain the same, because to remain so is its very nature. આપણે આ જગતમાં ન તો સુખનો વધારો કરી શકીએ કે નહીં દુઃખનો. આ પૃથ્વી પર જોવામાં આવતી સુખ અને દુઃખની શક્તિનો સરવાળો અનંત કાળ સુધી એકસરખો જ રહેવાનો. આપણે દુઃખોને એક બાજુથી બીજી બાજુએ અને બીજી બાજુથી આ બાજુએ ધકેલીએ તોપણ એ તેટલાં જ રહેવાનાં, કેમ કે એ એમનો સ્વભાવ જ છે. આ ભરતી અને ઓટ, ઉત્થાન અને પતન જગતની પ્રકૃતિના મૂળમાં જ રહેલાં છે. हम इस संसार में सुख को नहीं बढ़ा सकते, और न दुःख को ही । इस संसार में शुभ और अशुभ शक्तियों की समष्टि सदैव समान रहेगी । हम उसे सिर्फ़ यहाँ से वहाँ और वहाँ से यहाँ ढकेलते रहते हैं; परन्तु यह निश्चित है कि वह सदैव समान रहेगी, क्योंकि वैसा रहना ही उसका स्वभाव है । ज्वार-भाटा, यह चढ़ाव-उतार तो संसार की प्रकृति ही है । (विवेकानंद साहित्य ग्रंथ 3 पृष्ठ 85)
