That material of which the mind is composed goes also to form the subtle matter called the Tanmatras. These become gross and make the external matter. That is the psychology of the Sankhya. So that between the intellect and the grosser matter outside there is only a difference in degree. The Purusha is the only thing which is immaterial. જે દ્રવ્યનું મન બનેલું છે, તે જ દ્રવ્યમાંથી સૂક્ષ્મ તન્માત્રાઓ બનેલી છે. આ તન્માત્રાઓ સ્થૂળ થઈને બાહ્ય પદાર્થ બને છે. સાંખ્યમતનું મનોવિજ્ઞાન એ છે. એ હિસાબે બુદ્ધિ અને બહારના વધુ સ્થૂળદ્રવ્ય વચ્ચેનો તફાવત માત્ર પ્રમાણનો જ છે. પુરુષ જ એકમાત્ર એવી વસ્તુ છે કે જે જડદ્રવ્ય નથી. मन जिस उपादान से निर्मित है, उसीसे तन्मात्रा नामक सूक्ष्म भूतों की उत्पत्ति होती है। उनके स्थूल हो जाने पर परिदृश्यमान भूतों की उत्पत्ति होती है। यही सांख्य का मनोविज्ञान है। अतएव बुद्धि और परिदृश्यमान स्थूल भूत में अन्तर केवल स्थूलता के तारतम्य में है। एकमात्र पुरुष ही चेतन है। (विवेकानंद साहित्य v. 1pg.45)
