Now, when we come to India, if you ask one of our ploughmen, “Do you know anything about politics?” He will reply, “What is that?” He does not understand the socialistic movements, the relation between capital and labour, and all that… But you ask, “What is your religion?” He replies, “Look here, my friend, I have marked it on my forehead.” He can give you a good hint or two on questions of religion… That is our nation’s life. હવે આપણે ભારતનો વિચાર કરીએ. જો આપણા કોઈ કિસાનને તમે પૂછશો કે તમે રાજકારણ વિશે કાંઈ જાણો છો ? તો એ નવાઈ પામી સામે પૂછશે : ‘એ વળી શું છે?’ તમારી સમાજવાદની ચળવળ, મૂડી અને મજૂરી વચ્ચેનો સંબંધ અને એવું બધું એ સમજતો જ નથી… પણ તમે એને પૂછશો કે ‘ભાઈ ! તારો ધર્મ ક્યો ?’ તો એ જવાબ આપશે કે ‘બાપુ ! મારા કપાળ સામે જોઈ લો; તિલક તાણેલું છે.’ ધાર્મિક પ્રશ્ન અંગે તમને એ એકાદ બે સારી એવી વાતો પણ કહી શકશે ખરો… આવું આપણા રાષ્ટ્રનું જીવન છે.
