Just as inequality is necessary for creation itself, so the struggle to limit it is also necessary. If there were no struggle to become free and get back to God, there would be no creation either. It is the difference between these two forces that determines the nature of the motives of men. There will always be these motives to work, some tending towards bondage and others towards freedom. જેમ સૃષ્ટિ-રચના માટે અસમાનતા આવશ્યક છે, તેમ તે અસમાનતાને મર્યાદિત રાખવાનો સંઘર્ષ પણ આવશ્યક છે. સ્વાધીન થવાની અને પરમાત્મા પાસે પહોંચવાનો જો સંઘર્ષ ન હોય તો સૃષ્ટિ પણ અસ્તિત્વમાં ન હોય. આ બે બળો વચ્ચે રહેલી ભિન્નતા માનવોના કાર્ય પાછળના હેતુઓનું સ્વરૂપ નક્કી કરે છે. કાર્ય કરવા માટે આ હેતુઓ હંમેશાં હોવાના; અમુક હેતુઓ બંધન ભણી લઈ જવાના, અમુક મુક્તિ તરફ લઈ જવાના. जिस प्रकार सृष्टि के लिए विषमता उपयोगी है, उसी प्रकार उसे घटाने की चेष्टा भी नितान्त आवश्यक है। यदि मुक्ति एवं ईश्वर के पास लौट जाने की चेष्टा न हो, तो भी सृष्टि नहीं रह सकती। कर्म करने के पीछे मनुष्य का जो हेतु रहता है, वह इन दो शक्तियों के अन्तर से ही निश्चित होता है। कर्म के प्रति ये प्रेरणाएँ सदा विद्यमान रहेंगी कुछ बन्धन की ओर ले जायँगी और कुछ मुक्ति की ओर । (विवेकानंद साहित्य ग्रंथ 3 पृष्ठ ८७)
