It is not much use to talk about religion until one has felt it. Why is there so much disturbance, so much fighting and quarrelling in the name of God? There has been more bloodshed in the name of God than for any other cause, because people never went to the fountain-head; they were content only to give a mental assent to the customs of their forefathers, and wanted others to do the same. જ્યાં સુધી પોતાને અનુભવ ન થાય ત્યાં સુધી, ધર્મની માત્ર વાતો કરવાનો કશો ઉપયોગ નથી. ઈશ્વરને નામે આટલી ગડબડ, આટલા ઝઘડા અને કજિયા શા માટે છે ? બીજી કોઈ પણ બાબત કરતાં ઈશ્વરને નામે વધારે રક્તપાત થયો છે, કારણ કે લોકો ધર્મના 9 મૂળ સુધી ગયા જ નહિ; તેઓને તેમના બાપદાદાના રીતરિવાજોને માનસિક સંમતિ આપીને સંતોષ થતો હતો અને બીજાઓ પણ તેમ કરે એમ ઇચ્છતા હતા. जब तक कोई अनुभव नहीं कर लेता, तब तक धर्म की बात करना ही वृथा है। भगवान् के नाम पर इतनी लड़ाई, विरोध और झगड़ा क्यों ? भगवान् के नाम पर जितना खून बहा है, उतना और किसी कारण से नहीं। ऐसा क्यों ? इसीलिए कि कोई भी व्यक्ति मूल तक नहीं गया। सब लोग पूर्वजों के कुछ आचारों का अनुमोदन करके ही संतुष्ट थे। वे चाहते थे के दूसरे भी वैसा ही करें। (विवेकानंद साहित्य V. 1pg. 37)
