If we understand the giving up of the world in its old, crude sense, then it would come to this: that we must not work, that we must be idle, sitting like lumps of earth, neither thinking nor doing anything, but must become fatalists, driven about by every circumstance, ordered about by the laws of nature, drifting from place to place… But that is not what is meant. We must work… He works, who is not propelled by his own desires, by any selfishness whatsoever. He works, who has no ulterior motive in view. He works, who has nothing to gain from work. જો આપણે જગતના ત્યાગને તેના જૂના અણઘડ અર્થમાં ઘટાવીએ તો તેનો અર્થ એવો થાય કે આપણે કામ ન કરવું; આપણે આળસુ બની બેસી રહેવું, માટીના ઢેફાની માફક પડ્યા રહેવું – નહિ કશો વિચાર કે નહિ કશું કર્તવ્ય ! માત્ર પ્રારબ્ધવાદી બની રહેવું અને પ્રત્યેક સંજોગોમાં એક સ્થળેથી બીજે સ્થળે પ્રકૃતિના નિયમો અનુસાર ઘસડાયા કરવું… પણ ખરો અર્થ એવો કદી નથી. આપણે કર્મ કરવું જ જોઈએ… જે પોતાની તૃષ્ણાથી ઘસડાતો નથી, જે કોઈ સ્વાર્થથી પ્રેરાતો નથી, તે જ ખરેખર કર્મ કરે છે; કર્મમાંથી જેને કોઈ ફળપ્રાપ્તિનો ઇરાદો નથી તે જ કર્મ કરે છે; કર્મમાંથી જેને કંઈ મેળવવાનું નથી તે જ સાચું કર્મ કરે છે.
