Says our Vyasa, “In the Kali Yuga there is one Karma left. Sacrifices and tremendous Tapasyas are of no avail now. Of Karma one remains, and that is the Karma of giving.” And of these gifts, the gift of spirituality and spiritual knowledge is the highest; the next gift is the gift of secular knowledge; the next is the gift of life; and the fourth is the gift of food. આપણા વ્યાસ મુનિ કહે છે : ‘કલિયુગમાં એક જ કર્મ બાકી રહ્યું છે. યજ્ઞો અને ઘોર તપસ્યાઓ અત્યારે નિરુપયોગી છે. કર્મોમાંથી એક જ કરવા જેવું બાકી રહ્યું છે અને એ છે દાનકર્મ.’ અને આ બધાં દાનોમાં અધ્યાત્મ દાન, આધ્યાત્મિક જ્ઞાનનું દાન સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ છે; ત્યાર પછી બીજા નંબરનું દાન છે વિદ્યાદાન; ત્યાર પછી આવે જીવનદાન અને ચોથું આવે છે અન્નદાન. महर्षि व्यास ने कहा है, ‘इस कलियुग में मनुष्यों के लिए एक ही कर्म शेष रह गया है। आजकल यज्ञ और कठोर तपस्याओं से कोई फल नहीं होता । इस समय दान ही एकमात्र कर्म है।’ और दानों में धर्मदान, अर्थात् आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान का दान ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ है दूसरा दान है विद्यादान, तीसरा प्राणदान और चौथा अन्नदान । (विवेकानंद साहित्य ग्रंथ 5 पृष्ठ 117)
