Heart’s Thanks

Your words came just when needed –

Like a breeze blowing and bringing from the wide, soft sea

Some cooling spray to a meadow scorched with heat

And choked by dust and clouds of sifted sand

That hateful whirlwinds, envious of its bloom,

Had tossed upon it.

But the cool sea breeze came laden with the odors of the sea

And damp with the spray that laid the dust and sand

And brought new life and strength to blade and bloom.

So words of thine came over miles to me,

Fresh from the mighty sea, a true friend’s heart,

And brought me hope and strength, and swept away

The dusty webs that human spiders had spun across my path.

Friend and that word means much –

So few there are who reach, like thee, a hand

Up over all the barking curs of spite

And give the clasp, when most its need is felt.

Friend, newly found, accept my full heart’s thanks.

એવે અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!

ધરતી ધખે રે ધીંગા તાપમાં, પ્રજળે બળબળતી લાય;

આંધિયું ઊઠે રે ઊની રેતની, ન મળે ઊગરવા ઉપાય,

– એવે અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!(૧)

મનની નિકુંજો મુરઝાઈ ગઈ, જે દિ’ઘોર ઝંઝાને ઉત્પાત;

તે દિ’તારા પરશે કૉળી ઊઠી, લીલાંલીલાં તરણાંની ભાત,

– એવા અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!(૨)

અફાટ મહેરામણ ઘેરું ઘૂઘવે, છેડે જાણે શાંતિના સૂર;

હૈડું ઠર્યું ને મુજમાં પ્રગટિયાં હોશ ને હામ કેરાં નૂર,

– એવા અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!(૩)

એવી એ સમદરની શીળી લહેરખી,

વ્યાપી ગઈ અંગેઅંગ તમામ;

ઘાવ તનમનના એણે રુઝવ્યા, કરી મીઠા મલમુંનાં કામ,

– એવા અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!(૪)

દોહ્યલો નવલનેહી કોણ એ? જાણું નહિ જાત કે પાત;

પિછાણું નાદે ને અમરત છાંટણે, ને ઝંખું એનો હરદમ સાથ,

– જેના અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા!(૫)

સુહૃદ – સખા કે ગુરુ તને શું કહું? મારી ખૂટી પડતી વાણ;

મનડું મુંઝાતું ગુંજી રહ્યું: “તું તો મારા પ્રાણનો યે પ્રાણ!”

– તારા અણીને ટાણે મેં શબદું સાંભળ્યા(૬)

અદીઠો રહીને હાથ મારો ઝાલિયો, નવતર જીવનનો રણકાર;

ગજવ્યો તેં પ્યારા! કેમ મૂલવું?

બોલું બસ ત્રણ અક્ષર: “આ-ભા-૨”
